Middle School Contest Repertoire Guidelines Update For South Region

We would like to share an important update regarding the middle school contest performance guidelines.

The current middle school guidelines state that programs must perform three contrasting pieces. However, after thoughtful discussion, the TAME Board has voted to allow flexibility for this year’s contest by permitting programs to perform two to three contrasting pieces.

This decision was made in consideration of several factors. Last year, a middle school UIL contest in the Valley experienced complications that resulted in the contest being temporarily removed and later reinstated under a different, non-UIL-sanctioned format. This occurred after TAME’s middle school guidelines had already been established and published. As a result, that contest listed only two contrasting pieces, and several programs prepared accordingly.

Additionally, we recognize that many middle school programs are still in their early stages of development. With the UIL-style contest scheduled just two weeks prior to the TAME contest, requiring a third piece at this time may create unnecessary stress for students and directors.

In the spirit of supporting program growth and honoring the preparation already completed, the Board feels that allowing two to three contrasting pieces is the most equitable and supportive approach for this contest cycle.

Reminder: it does not need to be a Son Jalisciense. Popurri's are allowed as long as it is within the time limit stated in the Handbook (10 minutes) .

Thank you for your continued dedication to your students and for all that you do to support mariachi education. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Warm regards,

On behalf of the TAME Board of Directors
